77State Grid Tibet Electric Power Co., Ltd. recently reported that the 2024 annual Tibetan electricity export program officially began on May 17. It is expected that approximately 2 billion kilowatt-hours of clean energy will be exported this year, generating an estimated economic benefit of about 600 million yuan. Additionally, this effort will contribute to reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 1.6 million tons and sulfur dioxide emissions by 50,000 tons in central and eastern China, among other regions, making a positive contribution to China's green and low-carbon development.
In recent years, Tibet's clean energy industry has made significant progress. To date, the overall proportion of clean energy in the Tibet power grid has exceeded 90%, with hydropower and photovoltaic energy standing out particularly. Essentially, clean energy supply has been achieved. This year, the scope of Tibetan electricity exports will cover five major regions: North China, Central China, East China, Northwest China, and Southwest China, as well as 16 provinces and cities including Beijing, Shanghai, and Hunan. This will further promote the green transformation of Tibet's energy sector and provide strong support for peak summer electricity supply nationwide.
Since the first export of Tibetan electricity by the Tibet power grid in 2015, by the end of 2023, Tibet had cumulatively exported over 13.6 billion kilowatt-hours of hydropower and other clean energy, creating economic benefits exceeding 3.7 billion yuan, and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by more than 10.41 million tons. These efforts have made a positive contribution to the clean and low-carbon energy transition in central and eastern China and other regions.
