01 Dancing with Carbon
In 2005, with the entry into force of the Kyoto Protocol, the carbon circle began to emerge. Article 12 of the Protocol stipulates the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), allowing developed countries to meet their compliance targets by investing in emission reduction projects in developing countries. During this period, activities in the carbon circle mainly revolved around the development, reporting, implementation, and trading of CDM projects. China became a significant player in global carbon trading during this stage, with a large number of consulting firms entering the field, actively developing carbon assets. However, with the expiration of the first commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol, international carbon market prices fell below cost, plunging the carbon circle into a downturn. Many practitioners left the field due to market downturns, and the carbon circle fell silent.
In 2013, China launched pilot carbon trading markets, providing an opportunity for the revival of the carbon circle. During this period, carbon circle business was mainly focused on providing carbon emission accounting services to the government and designated enterprises, with limited business volume and practitioners primarily consisting of carbon auditors. Meanwhile, with the signing of the Paris Agreement, international attention to climate change was reignited, bringing new hope for the future development of the carbon circle. However, the construction of domestic carbon markets still faced many challenges, such as incomplete market mechanisms, inadequate laws and regulations, and low enterprise participation.
Thirteen years ago today, Carbonstop bravely entered this arena without fear.
The most basic work of carbon reduction is carbon accounting, which involves understanding the baseline of carbon emissions. As a pioneer in the industry, Carbonstop recognized this from the very beginning. Adhering to the mission of "letting every product have a carbon footprint," Carbonstop continuously promotes the concept and solutions of carbon accounting.
Early carbon accounting operations relied entirely on human effort and Excel spreadsheets, requiring personnel to collect and enter corporate emission source data item by item into the tables. Carbon accounting required teamwork, and sometimes colleagues used different templates. When industry parameters were updated, they might forget to modify them. Finding the right spreadsheet on the computer often took a long time. "Once data was entered incorrectly, it was even more troublesome to trace back each item. After completing reports, cross-checking was necessary, and if the other party had any questions, you would need to recheck everything."
Despite the early difficulties and lack of widespread understanding and recognition of carbon accounting, the Carbonstop team never gave up, steadily forging its own era story. They believed that carbon reduction is a long-term endeavor.
"The charm of software is replicability, with costs decreasing over time, eliminating the need for labor-intensive manual calculations." Thus, in 2019, Carbonstop began to focus on developing the Carbon Management Cloud Platform CCloud, optimizing, iterating, and upgrading it repeatedly. Since then, Carbon Management SaaS CarbonCloud, Carbon Management Software, and Carbon Management Consulting have become the most solid foundations of Carbonstop. In its thirteenth year, Carbonstop won the bid for the 5G product carbon footprint software project of China Unicom, serving all three major operators—China Mobile, China Telecom, and China Unicom. As a technology provider, Carbonstop supported the release of Du Xiaoman's ESG report.
In 2020, China proposed goals for peak carbon emissions and carbon neutrality, and the concept of "dual carbon" gradually gained traction across society. Speculators rushed in, and new forces emerged one after another. After lying low for over a decade, those in the carbon circle found that they no longer needed to explain much, as many enterprises began to approach them voluntarily. More and more companies started actively seeking carbon reduction solutions and jointly promoting carbon reduction efforts.
This is not only due to policy incentives but also because they realized that "dual carbon" is key to the sustainable development of enterprises. Through long-term cooperation and exchanges with leading enterprises, Carbonstop continuously summarized the difficulties and pain points of enterprises, developing a set of carbon neutrality methodologies suitable for Chinese enterprises—CREOS: Calculating, Reducing, Engaging, Offsetting, Spreading. First, calculate the carbon baseline, then combine it with the business model of the industry to find technological solutions with significant or great potential for emission reduction and engage stakeholders in reduction actions.
