While it is well-known that heavy industries like steel and energy need to achieve carbon neutrality, did you know that the pens we use for writing and drawing can also be carbon neutral? One of the world's largest stationery manufacturers, M&G (Morning Glory), has launched China's first carbon-neutral stationery.

Today, M&G held a new product launch event at the Jiu Mu Zawase store in Shanghai Jing'an Joy City. Yan Luhui, founder and CEO of Carbonstop, was invited to attend the event along with Chen Zidan, Chief Sustainability Officer of M&G, Tian Jin, Project Director of Meituan Waimai Green Plan, and Zou Hong, General Manager of Jiu Mu Zawase, to witness the debut and market launch of China's first carbon-neutral stationery.

Yan Luhui stated that product carbon neutrality is a microcosm of the carbon neutrality process. Currently, most sustainable consumption products in the Chinese market focus on food and beverages, leaving large gaps in other sectors. There is a great need for leading brands to guide industry development, encouraging suppliers and consumers to join in, thus forming a healthy, vibrant, and sustainable carbon-neutral ecosystem.
M&G was the first listed company in China's stationery industry to release an ESG report. This time, M&G collaborated with Meituan Waimai Green Plan, using recycled meal boxes to create the first carbon-neutral stationery series, setting a very good example.

Carbonstop completed the carbon accounting and offset of greenhouse gas emissions for this series and issued a carbon neutrality certificate. The series includes eight individual items: ballpoint pens (three packaging types), dual-tip markers, highlighters, extended pen cases, slanted pen holders, and mini staplers.
According to ISO14067-2018 standards, Carbonstop used a full lifecycle quantification method to calculate the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and removals generated during the raw material acquisition, production processing, distribution, use, and disposal stages of the products.
After calculation by Carbonstop, the carbon footprint of the product at each stage of its lifecycle is as follows (emissions during the use stage are negligible and therefore ignored):

How did M&G achieve carbon neutrality for this stationery series?
During production, M&G actively implemented energy-saving and emission-reduction measures, such as full coverage of photovoltaic power generation in factories and the use of recycled plastic materials, to reduce the product's carbon footprint as much as possible.
For unavoidable carbon emissions, under the professional guidance and technical support of Carbonstop, M&G completed the carbon offset through the cancellation of Certified Emission Reductions (CERs) verified by the Clean Development Mechanism Executive Board (CDM-EB), ultimately achieving carbon neutrality for the entire product lifecycle.

Carbonstop's vision is to make every product have a carbon footprint. In addition to assisting M&G in launching China's first carbon-neutral stationery, Carbonstop has also collaborated with Yili on Jindian娟姗 organic pure milk, and with Anchor to launch China's first "zero-carbon cake," as well as supporting Zhenggu Brand's over 30 products to achieve carbon neutrality.

Carbonstop hopes to assist more industry pioneers as it has done in previous collaborations. Carbonstop's SaaS platform, Carbon Cloud CCloud, possesses a globally recognized authoritative and comprehensive database of carbon emission factors, capable of interfacing with multiple mainstream verification and certification organizations and carbon exchange platforms both domestically and internationally.
Companies can purchase green certificates, forest carbon sinks, CCERs, and other carbon credits through Carbon Cloud CCloud, streamlining the account opening process, making it easier for companies to achieve carbon neutrality and ensuring that their carbon management is more compliant, transparent, and efficient.
Carbonstop aims to help more and more companies achieve carbon neutrality through its professional products and services and hopes that more people will join the low-carbon cause, working together to build a sustainable future!
